Why We Love Portuguese Water Dogs

There are more capable dogs. There are calmer dogs. There are certainly easier dogs. But there isn't a breed we love more than the Portuguese Water Dog — and we've been in and around dogs for a long time.

PWDs are extraordinary companions because they read people. They notice moods. They lean into their families. They want a job and they want to be near you while they do it.

That intuition is what makes them thrive in so many homes: active households, quieter households, families with kids, retirees, working professionals. The breed adapts remarkably well — as long as it's included in daily life.

It's also what makes the placement process matter. A well-matched PWD becomes part of the family's daily rhythm. A mismatched one gets under-stimulated and finds their own creative outlets (usually not the kind you love).
